Inventions

New South Wales residents have long been recognised as an innovative community.

The Inventions and Inventors Database consists of over 20,000 entries covering persons and companies that registered inventions in NSW from 1855 to 1884 (source: New South Wales Parliamentary Papers) and Patents and Certificates of Provisional Protection from 1887 to 1902 (source: New South Wales Government Gazette).

The database is of particular interest to persons whose ancestor was an Engineer or is known to have ‘tinkered’ with things. It covers a wide range of inventions and contains the following details:

o Name of person or company registering invention

o Address

o Description of invention

o Patent details.

1838 Pre-paid postage - Colonial Postmaster-General of New South Wales, James Raymond introduced the world's first pre-paid postal system.
